Objectives

This course aims to help students
  • write with a reader-centred approach; 
  • organise their writing logically with a good introduction and conclusion to the central theme; 
  • understand the process of drafting and develop successful editing skills; 
  • use references in their writing and cite the sources correctly; 
  • improve their grammatical accuracy; and § deliver effective oral presentations.

Format

The course comprises the following: ten writing units covering three broad areas — organisation of texts, reader-centred writing and presentation; two major assignments requiring the application of the skills acquired in the writing units; an examination of selected areas of grammar when necessary; and a study of effective oral presentations (each student gives a short presentation and students evaluate each other’s performances).

Evaluation consists of continual assessment and a final examination.
