English (NK1001)

Objectives

NK1001 is a writing course that emphasizes individual writing to complement first year business projects which are mainly
group-oriented. The course aims to provide students with

§ strategies to handle their readings, evaluate ideas and present reasoned argument or exposition;

§ practice in analysis and exposition of trends and patterns, and drawing valid generalisations or conclusions from
non-verbal data; and

§ editing techniques at the sentence and discourse levels.

Format

Students read selected passages and then discuss them. These activities provide stimulus for the writing activities which are
based on the process approach. Exercises for data analysis and remedial grammar are mainly task-based.

Evaluation consists of continual assessment and a final examination.

Business Communication (BK2007)

Objectives

 The course aims at preparing the students to handle the oral and written communication tasks they will need to perform in the workplace.

 Format

Students learn the theoretical aspects of both written and oral communication through lectures on topics such as principles of communication,  business letters and reports, interpersonal communication, oral presentations, negotiations and meetings.  In tutorials, students are given the opportunity to apply and discuss these theoretical principles in contexts provided through a series of integrated tasks.

 The course is learner-centred with the students working in groups and appraising each other’s work critically.  Projects include a short formal report, a business letter and a group oral presentation.

 There is continual assessment and a final examination.
