Business and Technical Communication (CS2301)

 

Objectives

 This course aims to provide students with

  • the basic skills for written and oral communication, thereby enhancing their ability to communicate effectively and professionally in organisational contex;

  • an understanding of the role that communication and documentation play in a software development environment;

  • the knowledge of the different types of documentation required in a software development process; and

  • the basic skills for designing and writing effective technical documentation.

 Format

Students attend lectures, tutorials and teacher-student conferences in this course.

The lectures focus on general communication concepts such as software documentation, oral presentation and business documentation.  The lectures cover information required for the students to do their case studies and assignments.  The tutorials focus on discussions which help students work on their assignments.

This course uses a problem-solving documentation methodology (communication heuristics) as a framework for the assignments and case studies.  Evaluation in this course comprises continual assessment and a final examination.
